Situated a short 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, Waiheke Island is the third most populated island in New Zealand after the North and South Islands.
The island is a mix of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves with many of the 8,000 residents living on the western end of the island.
Whether you want to experience mountain biking, sea kayaking, vineyard or olive grove tours, a thriving art and craft culture or, simply chilling out in one of the plethora of cafes and restaurants, the options for relaxation are plenty.
Lying 88km northeast of Auckland, at the edge of the Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island is the fourth largest landmass in New Zealand
Its 285 square kilometers sustains a population of around 700. With over 60% of the Island administered by the Department of Conservation, it remains one of the few un-spoilt places in the world. With the absence of any predatory wildlife, rare flora and fauna and endangered wildlife thrive.
Compared to city life, the Barrier has no street lighting; there is no reticulated mains power, water supply or sewage system.
Electricity is generally supplied by private generator or alternative power system, and, cell phone coverage is limited to only a few spots.
Island activities include excellent fishing, surfing, diving, snorkeling, swimming at any number of beautiful beaches, or simply relaxing; the island is the perfect ‘step back to a simpler time’ experience.
